Piazza Navona Series

Oris Barber's Commentary: "This is a photo in Piazza Navona, one of Rome's most popular gathering places. It shows Bernini's Neptune Fountain in the foreground, and his Fountain of the four Rivers (four great rivers of the known world: Nile, Plate, Ganges, Danube) with obelisk rising from rocks, directly in front of Borromini's church of Sant'Agnese in Agone. Bernini and Borromini were "fierce and not always honorable" rivals, which is said to account for the manner in which Bernini covered the face of his figure depicting the Nile River, so the figure would not have to look at the ''horrible design'' of the church."
