una sfinge - a sphinx
una sfinge - a sphinx
Oris Barber's Comentary: "Scott, this statue is on Palatine Hill, and undoubtedly has some meaning in the Romulus story. I don't know, but if you do perhaps you can tell us."
This is a well-eroded sculpture of a sphinx. The designer/author is likely unknown as is the case with many poorly preserved and obscure works of art extant throughout Rome. It is plausible that this particular work could have been commissioned by Caesar Augustus who had a house (which burnt down) on the Palatine hill. He had used a sphinx signet as a seal for private letters and may have favored some association with the image of the sphinx.
