Fontana di Trevi - Trevi Fountain
|
|
Oris Barber's Comentary: "Between 1732 and 1751 Nicola Salvi created his masterpiece, Rome's largest and most famous fountain, Fontana di Trevi. Water is supplied by an ancient aqueduct originally constructed by Agrippa, the great patron of the arts, in the 1st century B.C., to bring water to his baths. The fountain depicts the "kingdom of the ocean": the sea god Oceanus (Neptune)with horses (one wild, one docile, surrounded by Tritons and shells. The fountain was largely ignored by Romans until it was popularized by the movie 'Three Coins in the Fountain.' Legend has it that if one throws a coin into the fountain he or she will return to Rome one day."
