La Fontana del Mascherone, via Giulia - Big Mask Fountain on via Giulia
Oris Barber's Comentary: "This fountain was a surprise. It is situated on a wall on the very narrow Via Giulia, just off Piazza Farnese. On the other side of the wall and running parallel to it is a major thoroughfare, Via Luntotevere (along the Tevere), near Ponte Sisto. This fountain is situated in a very obscure place."

This annoymous work, commissioned by the Farnese family and completed in 1626 is known as La Fontana del Mascherone - The Big Mask Fountain, and is situated at the southern end of via Giulia. It combines two ancient sculptures: a large marble basin and a grotesque marble face or "mask". This fountain flows with water from the Acqua Paola, though, in ceturies past it used to spout red wine during certain festivals.
