Castel Sant'Angelo - Castle of the Holy Angel / Mausoleum of Hadrian
Oris Barber's Comentary: "Just had to throw this one in, it is one of those serendipitious photos. I feel lucky to have gotten it."
| The Castel Sant'Angelo was built between 135 and 139 as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian and his successors. The
last burial took place in 211. In the fifth century, the mausoleum was converted to a fortress. An angel was put in place on the top as commissioned by Pope Gregory the Great after seeing an image of an archangel who proclaimed the end of a plague and at which time the Pope renamed the ediface to Castel Sant'Angelo. The original marble angel was replced in the eighteenth century by an 18 foot bronze angel which exists today. A long corridor built between the Vatican and the Castle used to provide the Popes safe passage during times of attack. The Castle was used as a prison until 1901 when it was converted to a museum. Mussolini commissioned some restorative work to be performed on the Castle and it has been an established major tourist attraction ever since.
